The German Election Mess and the Relative (compared to 1983) Irrelevance of the Result

September 19, 2005 by admin

Like many Americans, I had hoped that Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) would win a convincing victory in yesterday’s elections in Germany and replace the anti-American government of the Social Democrats‘ (SPD) Gerhard Schröder. And while we are disappointed by the returns yesterday in which neither coalition (CDU and Free Democrats (FPD) or the SPD and Green Party) received a majority of seats in the Bundestag, I realized how little the result matters in terms of the current geopolitical situation.
To be sure, President Bush’s hand would be strengthened if a CDU/FDP government emerges. And if Chancellor Gerhard Schröder should be replaced, Jacques Chirac will have lost his largest (& strongest) ally in his project to create a European bloc to counter the United States. Whichever government emerges, President Bush’s foreign policy will remain the same. Germany is no longer as relevant as it once was.
Twenty-two years ago, however, the German election really mattered. After Helmut Schmidt, the last serious SPD Chancellor, lost a vote of confidence in the Bundestag on October 1, 1982, the CDU’s Helmut Kohl became Chancellor. As his party faced the March 6, 1983 elections, there was a growing movement against the deployment of Pershing II missiles, a deployment essential to President Reagan’s Cold War strategy.
Had the CDU/FDP coalition then lost, the Bundestag would likely not have voted that November to deploy these missiles. The Gipper’s hand would have been weakened and the Berlin Wall likely would not have fallen in 1989.
In 1983, the Germany election was significant. While the position of the United States would certainly be strengthened by the success of Ms. Merkel, it won’t be weakened should Schröder somehow manage to cling to power.

The Charge of Hypocrisy: Leftists’ Standard Dodge in Debate

September 19, 2005 by admin

Over at PrismWarden, Robbie offers some insight into the recent debate between Christopher Hitchens and George Galloway. Hitchens shares his thoughts on the debate here (HT: Powerline), but I found Robbie’s post a better read. As an outside observer, he provides a most unique perspective.
Robbie noted that:

Galloway’s entire argument, it seemed, was that Christopher Hitchens opposed intervention in Iraq during the 1991 Gulf War, thus supporting it now nullifies anything to be said on the topic. Similarly, Galloway’s answer against the present war on terror seems to rest entirely on the realpolitik practices of the U.S. and Britain during the 1970’s and 1980s. We helped create the situation, you see.
To oppose these various regimes now makes us hypocrites.

Indeed, Robbie finds that “For many on the Left, hypocrisy is quite possibly the greatest crime one can ever possibly commit.” Thus, instead of engaging supporters of the war (or indeed, advocates of any argument they oppose), liberals are all to eager to nitpick at the hypocrisies (or alleged hypocrisies) of conservatives rather than address the merits of their arguments. Recall, the ruckus a few months back over the supposed hypocrisy of Jeff Gannon? As if the hypocrisy of a reporter for a two-bit news organization who happened to get a White House press pass somehow merited national attention.
Anyway, I think Robbie’s right on the money about many on the left. They’re all to eager to dwell on our hypocrisy (or supposed hypocrisy) as if it absolves them of the responsibility of making real arguments. He has more to say on this topic — and says it in a manner that is fun to read — so just read the whole thing!

Bill Clinton: Without Class

September 19, 2005 by admin

After returning yesterday evening from an afternoon & evening of socializing and entertainment, I logged on to find another whopper from the master of the whopper, the man who joins Democrats Grover Cleveland and Woodrow Wilson (Democrats as well) as the only presidents re-elected without winning a majority of the popular vote:

It’s like when they issued the evacuation order. . . . That affects poor people differently. A lot of them in New Orleans didn’t have cars. A lot of them who had cars had kinfolk they had to take care of. They didn’t have cars, so they couldn’t take them out.

Yep, while interviewed on ABC’s This Week by his former acolyte George Stephanopolous, Bill Clinton spoke those words. The former president forgot to mention that it was the Democratic Mayor of New Orleans who let his city’s fleet of buses sit idle and so failed to evacuate the less fortunate residents of the Crescent City.
Perhaps, Clinton was upset that many of those affected the hurricane liked the president’s speech last Thursday. Even the woman who managed his designated successor’s presidential campaign was proud of the president and the plan he put forward.
Clinton didn’t just take issue with Mr. Bush’s handling of Hurricane Katrina. He also faulted him for the war in Iraq and other issues. And while I was busying socializing, browsing for books and watching the pleasant flick, Just Like Heaven, a few bloggers weighed in on Mr. Clinton’s lack of class. They pointed out how his criticisms of his successor were at odds with his past statements, made both while he was in office and after he left. This blogger does a good job of fisking the former president’s interview with his one-time aide. (HT: Polipundit’s Lorie Byrd.)
Powerline claims we are entering “uncharted waters” for until now, “former Presidents of both parties have stayed out of politics and have avoided criticizing their successors.” Lorie Byrd has two posts on the topic (calling him a “No-Class Slime” and providing great links here). At National Review Online’s the Corner, K-Lo says Clinton’s working on the “MoveOn crowd for Hill.”

Required Reading at the DNC

The willfull ignorance of Bush-bashers — and their media allies

September 17, 2005 by admin

Almost since Bruce’s first post on this blog, we have been faulted for not criticizing the president enough. And while on the whole, we believe he has done a good job, each of us is aware of his faults (and his flaws). I have made clear my opposition to the Federal Marriage Amendment (which the president supports) and have taken him to task for failing to follow Ronald Reagan’s vision of federalism. I have not said as much as I would like about his inability to hold the line on federal spending or about his inadquate solutions to deal with illegal immigration and border-control.
While I acknowledge that George W. Bush has been far from a perfect president, I frequently find myself in the position of Roger Simon who asked yesterday: “Am I the only one who likes Bush more every time he is excessively attacked by the mainstream media?” Roger’s “case in point” is Hurricane Katrina. Instead of seeing the Administration’s mistakes in the context of the size of the storm and the accomplishments of federal (as well as state and local) agencies in providing relief (see here for a partial listing of what went right, HT: Powerline), the MSM focus on the mistakes — so as to create a legend of his failure.
As Roger put it, “The willful ignorance of the media in their zeal to get Bush is peculiar.” And adds, “The more these attacks continue in this manner the more Bush will thrive. That’s the way humans react to unfairness.” And perhaps that’s why we have spent more defending the president than dwelling on our areas of disagreement. We see how unfairly the media, particularly the gay media, has treated the president.

Michael Moore’s Minutemen

September 17, 2005 by admin

Michael Moore said that, “The Iraqis who have risen up against the occupation are not ‘insurgents’ or ‘terrorists’ or ‘The Enemy.’ They are the REVOLUTION, the Minutemen, and their numbers will grow — and they will win.”
Well, via The Washington Times , Army Col. H.R. McMaster offers some details about Michael Moore’s Minutemen:

But it was his description of how the enemy occupied their safe haven that got the most attention. Col. McMaster told of beheadings, gunshot killings, a booby-trapped dead child and kidnappings. “This is the worst of the worst in terms of people in the world,” he said. “To protect themselves here, what the enemy did is they waged the most brutal and murderous campaign against the people of Tal Afar. … The enemy here did just the most horrible things you can imagine, in one case murdering a child, placing a booby trap within the child’s body and waiting for the parent to come recover the body of their child and exploding it to kill the parents.” . . .
Col. McMaster said soldiers captured some associates of lead terrorist Abu Musab Zarqawi. “They are some of the worst human beings on the face of the Earth,” he said. “There is no really greater pleasure for us than to kill or capture these particular individuals.”

While U.S. soldiers are eager to kill such barbarians, Michael Moore is rooting for them to win.

Living Together In The Gay Household

September 16, 2005 by admin

Another great gem from PrismWarden — Tell Me Lies And I’ll Love You Forever.

No matter what our disagreements, we are forced through various pressures to live in the same homosexual house, and we all have different ideas about how that house should be run. Studying this, I have come to a conclusion:
Gay conservatives are the parents, and gay liberals are the teenagers
.

Nailed it!

The problem with the gay liberal mindset is that it is infested with a naïve idealism and penchant for wanting to see the world as how they wish it to be, not how it objectively is. The Democratic Party is their first true high school love, and like all true loves, the warts and faults have been smudged to a blurry shadow cast by their perceived Adonis.
Gay conservatives, on the other hand, are generally cynical adults. While some decry it as nothing more than jaded bitterness, cynicism is a characteristic wrought of experience and the wisdom that accompanies it. The Republican Party is not our true love, nor particularly a love. They are a friend we generally respect without feeling a need to be inexpressibly loyal to their every belief. We realize grown adults may reasonably disagree with one another without destroying a friendship and indignantly declaring, “You don’t love me!” before flouncing out of the room
.

Please read the entire piece. PrismWarden gets to the heart of something I’ve been thinking a lot about since beginning this blog. Why are gay liberals so hateful toward gay conservatives?
The parent/kid relationship is a great way to explain it. Another way is that Gay Conservatives have figured out how to be gay within the American mainstream and even among those who tolerate but disapprove. Gay Liberals want to be there, but are too busy throwing stones and having temper tantrums and demanding instant and total gratification to figure out how to do it.
In short, Gay Liberals are jealous of Gay Conservatives. Discuss…

ABC News Shocked: New Orleans’ Katrina Victims Praise Bush, Blame State and City

September 16, 2005 by admin

Via NewsBusters

Reynolds asked Connie London: “Did you harbor any anger toward the President because of the slow federal response?” She rejected the premise: “No, none whatsoever, because I feel like our city and our state government should have been there before the federal government was called in.” She pointed out: “They had RTA buses, Greyhound buses, school buses, that was just sitting there going under water when they could have been evacuating people.”

(GP Ed. Note – Is Connie a blog-reader?)

Not one of the six people interviewed on camera had a bad word for Bush — despite Reynolds’ best efforts. Reynolds goaded: “Was there anything that you found hard to believe that he said, that you thought, well, that’s nice rhetoric, but you know, the proof is in the pudding.” Brenda Marshall answered, “No, I didn’t,” prompting Reynolds to marvel to anchor Ted Koppel: “Very little skepticism here.”

Video link here.
I guess we should listen to those who were in New Orleans, since I’m not sure any of us “Pundit Morning Quarterbacks” were there ourselves.
-Bruce (GayPatriot)
UPDATE (from GPW): Listening to NPR this morning, Blogger Matt Duffy heard only negative reactions from evacuees to the president’s speech. His conclusion:

What’s the difference between the ABC News coverage and NPR’s this morning? Simple. Because ABC was broadcasting live, they didn’t have the ability to present the news according to their frame. NPR, having 12 hours with which to work, managed to present the speech from the proper perspective: Bush sucks.

NYC’s Gay Penguins Break Up

September 16, 2005 by admin

Sad news…..
Political Penguin Would Know Not To Open Its Beak – Chicago Tribune

Roy and Silo, the two famous gay penguins at New York’s Central Park Zoo, are no longer a pair. Silo has gone straight.
They broke up after six years together. Once, they were provided a donated egg. They sat on it and hatched it and this was celebrated as some kind of penguin lifestyle choice in the New York Times on Feb. 7, 2004, under the headline “The Love that Dare Not Squeak Its Name.”
But that’s so over.

National Gay Groups To March In Anti-War Demonstration

September 16, 2005 by admin

Shocking… simply shocking. I never would have guessed! Funny, the Gay Leftists want marriage but hate the institutions of religion… and they protest against the war (one in where we were attacked repeatedly), yet want gays to be allowed in the military. Can you say bi-polar?
Some Gay Groups To Join Iraq War Protest in DC – Washington Blade

United for Peace & Justice, a coalition of more than 1,300 local and national groups, is calling for an end to the war and the immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. From Sept. 24-26, the coalition plans to stage demonstrations across the country.
According to its Web site, UPJ coordinated more than 790 anti-war demonstrations worldwide on Feb. 15, 2003, including a New York City rally that brought out at least 500,000 people.
Pride at Work, the gay caucus within the AFL-CIO, is among the organizations preparing to march against the war.
Howard Wallace, vice president of the San Francisco labor council of the AFL-CIO, said gay groups and labor groups on the West Coast are collaborating on social justice issues, from the fight for same-sex marriage rights to ending the U.S. presence in Iraq.
Linking the Iraq war to a generalized assault on civil liberties, the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force opposed the war as part of the “Keep America Safe: Win Without War” coalition that included the National Organization for Women and the NAACP. The Task Force is backing the anti-war march by e-mailing supporters and calling on them to participate, according to a spokesperson for the group.

Here’s a real shocker for you…. the protests in DC are on the same day as the Socialist protests in the United Kingdom on the same topic. You mean our gay “leaders” are associated with socialist groups around the world? Huh.
I agree with the wise gay rights activist Frank Kameny who is quoted in the article: “If you try to do everything, you end up not doing anything very well.” Amen, brother.
UPDATE: I apologize for neglecting to mention that Log Cabin Republicans supported the war in Iraq and Chris Barron is quoted in the article.

“Log Cabin is committed to a strong and confident foreign policy,” Christopher Barron, political director of the Log Cabin Republicans wrote in an e-mail. “We support global efforts to win the war on terror. We wouldn’t comment on the propriety of the actions of other organizations. Obviously, each organization is going to do whatever it believes is appropriate in light of its mission.”

A Good Speech Recognizing that “Powerful American Determination” to Rebuild Better than Before

September 16, 2005 by admin

After watching the speech, I thought the president did what he needed do — and then some. His tone was exactly right and many of ideas right on the money. As I noted in my first post on the speech, I do have some concerns about what he said. Yet, of those conservatives pundits and bloggers I have read (or heard) since I first wrote, it seems I am one of the least enthusiastic about last night’s address. And I thought it was a pretty darn good speech. A very American speech. An optimistic, can-do speech.
Hugh Hewitt said the president’s “perfect pitch returned tonight” and his “looks backward and forward were on target.” On FoxNews, Dick Morris thought the president “rose to the occasion” and that the speech would help drive a turnaround in his poll numbers, particularly among women. Lorie Byrd “loved the religious references because they were beautiful and appropriate considering the wonderful work that has been done by faith-based organizations.”
Instead of focusing on the bickering and finger-pointing that have marked much of the media coverage these past two weeks, the president noted that this “was not a normal hurricane and the normal disaster relief system was not equal to it.” Yet, instead of using this line as an explanation of the failures of local, state and federal governments to provide relief, he, as a true American, did not evade responsibility. Instead, he said we are capable of meeting the challenges ahead of us and offered a number of proposals to meet those challenges.
He hailed the efforts of rescue workers and noted the generosity of the American people. Importantly, he assured those “who question the future of the Crescent City” that “there is no way to imagine America without New Orleans, and this great city will rise again.”

Initial Thoughts on the President’s Speech

September 15, 2005 by admin

I just watched the president’s speech from New Orleans on the Katrina disaster and recovery efforts. On the whole, I think he delivered a good speech and showed that he recognized the scope of the task ahead. I hope later in the evening to update this post with more extended thoughts on the speech because I do have some concerns.
Importantly, the president wants all departments of the federal government to investigate what went wrong with the response to this disaster — at all levels. He wants to find out what went wrong so we can figure out how to better improve our reaction to future disasters of this magnitude. This is exactly the attitude the chief executive should take in response to the failures of the recovery in the immediate aftermath of the storm. And this stand is clear contradistinction to the attitude of many Democrats, notably the House Minority Leader, and their allies in the blogosphere and MSM. They want investigations to serve primarily to prove their pre-existing theories of their chief adversary’s incompetence.
Tonight the president laid out his plans for what needs to be done in the wake of this unprecedented catastrophe. Let’s hope that his adversaries address the merits of this proposal.
-Dan (AKA GayPatriotWest): GayPatriotWest@aol.com
UPDATE: While yours truly watched speech on Fox, PrismWarden took in the coverage on ABC and observed

There is nothing sweeter than seeing an ABC reporter interviewing black New Orleaneans, asking questions fully intended to draw out criticism of the president, only to be met with tirades against the state and local governments and warm, unanimous support of the president.

Over at Polipundit, Lorie Byrd, an up and coming Athena, noted the same thing. One evacuee “said that what the President said lifted her up and gave her hope.”

Schwarzenegger to meet with Golden State Gay Leaders

September 15, 2005 by admin

Proving that he is above the mean and petty comments made by many gay activists and their allies in the state legislature, the good Governor of California has requested a meeting with leaders of the Golden State’s gay community. While Governor Schwarzenegger has not yet committed to attending the meeting next Wednesday, his chief of staff will chair the gathering.
Since the Governor indicated last week that he would veto a gay-marriage bill which passed the state Assembly, gay activists (particularly one very partisan state legislator) have leveled a number of accusations against him. At the same time, the legislature has been playing games with this legislation. Using a procedural maneuver, it has delayed the delivery of the bill to the Governor.
According to Log Cabin, Governor Schwarzenegger has already signed five pieces of pro-gay legislation since taking office in November 2003. With this meeting, this good man proves once again his concern for gay and lesbian citizens of the Golden State. It’s important now that we recognize that politicians can be pro-gay without supporting gay marriage.
Let’s not forget that nine years ago, HRC refused to rescind its endorsement of Bill Clinton when, in the dead of the night, he signed the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

Pelosi Upset Because House Panel Won’t Prove Bush alone is to Blame for Katrina Failures

September 15, 2005 by admin

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi led all but seven of her fellow Democrats in voting against a special committee to investigate the preparation for and response to Hurricane Katrina.” Labeling this committee “partisan,” the San Francisco liberal faults the federal response for falling “so very short” in its relief efforts, yet in a press release (which, for some reason comes up in a Yahoo! news search), she utters nary a word about failures at the state and local level.
For Ms Pelosi — as for all too many of her fellow Democrats and the overwhelmingly majority of the MSM — the issue is not determining what exactly happened in the wake of this the “seventh deadliest natural disaster to strike this country” (HT: GOP Vixen), but finding fault with President Bush and the Administration. They don’t want an investigation to find the facts but one which confirms the legend they have created about this disaster.

By the way, this is exactly the kind of crap that Log Cabin Republicans should take a stand on since it is typical of the senselessness of the Gay Left and the images that the gay media uses to portray gay men. But I guess there is too much Massachusetts-partying going on right now over at LCR HQ for them to care about this silly life-and-death stuff.

Bio-Threat In NJ? Three Plague-Ridden Mice Are Missing

September 15, 2005 by admin

Via the Newark Star-Ledger.

Three lab mice carrying deadly strains of plague have turned up missing from separate cages at a bioterror research facility in Newark, sparking a hushed, intensive investigation by federal and state authorities.
Officials said the animals could have been stolen from the center or simply misplaced in a colossal accounting error at one of the top-level bio-containment labs in the state.
“The FBI has expended substantial resources and put many agents into this investigation to satisfy — among other things — the most compelling question of whether public safety is at risk,” said Special Agent Steve Siegel, a bureau spokesman.
He said the investigation was continuing. The agents on the case are members of the Joint Terrorism Task Force and experts in biological agents that can be turned into weapons of mass destruction.

This is a story to keep your eye on. It may be nothing… hopefully it isn’t.
