Thanks to everyone we hit the 350,000 mark earlier this morning. That’s 350K in just over one year!
I am “blogged-out” from all the postings yesterday, and also pretty swamped with work today too. Oh yeah, and preparing my house for sale.
So I’m gonna go lite today unless something moves me…. like a bad hamburger.
Thanks again…. next stop – 500,000!

In Memoriam Robert Wise
Ever since I saw The Sound of Music as a child, it has been one of my favorite movies. Thus, it is with great sadness that I report the passing of its director, four-time Oscar winner Robert Wise.
Not only did he direct that top-grossing musical of all time (for many years the top-grossing film of all time), but he also directed other great films including West Side Story and The Day the Earth Stood Still. He garnered his first Oscar nod in 1942 for editing Citizen Kane. He worked with Orson Welles later that year on The Magnificent Ambersons. His body of work included almost every genre of film; he even directed the first Star Trek movie in 1979.
He has directed many of the silver screen’s brightest lights including Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer, Natalie Wood, Rita Moreno, Paul Newman, Patricia Neal, William Holden, Barbara Stanwyck, Richard Burton and James Mason. He represents the very best of what Hollywood can be. And while he will be missed, he leaves behind a great legacy.
Thank you, Robert Wise, for your many cinematic achievements and for assuring us that somewhere there’s a place for each one of us and reminding us to Climb Ev’ry Mountain.

Two Thoughtful Posts on Katrina
Over at Polipundit, Lorie Byrd has two excellent posts on the Katrina Disaster. In one, she lists the points she hopes the president will address in his speech tonight. In the second, she quotes an e-mail from one of her readers on the failings of the MSM in reporting this catastrophe. I highly recommend both posts.
Thoughts on the Massachusetts Vote on Gay Marriage
Just before leaving my apartment today for a meeting and errands, I read that in a constitutional convention, Massachusetts’ legislators voted 157-39, a margin of more than 4-1, against a proposed constitutional amendment which would overturn that state’s Goodridge decision mandating gay marriage, but would also establish for civil unions for same-sex couples.
While I understand that some legislators may have voted for this amendment because they did not want the state to recognize even civil unions, I think this is most significant vote on gay marriage yet in the United States. More significant that the votes in both houses of the legislature in the Golden State for two primary reasons, the first, is that the Massachusetts legislature is closer to the people than that here (in California). Their House of Representatives has twice as many members as ours (160 vs. 80) while the state has one-fifth as many people.
The second reason is that legislators have had time to consider the measure. Because of Massachusetts’ rules for amending its constitution, a joint session of the legislature must pass an amendment in two consecutive sessions before sending it to the voters. Legislators first voted on this last year.
I have long believed that we must trust legislatures — and to the people of the various states — to deal with the issue of marriage. While I believe that Goodrich was wrongly decided, the elected legislators of the Bay State have had now voted on gay marriage. Given that legislative districts there are much smaller than they are here in California, those legislators are closer to the people and thus, less in thrall to special interests than are our officials in California.
Moreover, in the year since they first voted, as legislators considered the issue, they also surely discussed it with their constituents. Perhaps, this truly does represent the will of the people in the Bay State. We could find out in 2008 should Massachusetts’ citizens succeed in placing an initiative on the ballot to amend the state’s constitution to bar gay marriage and civil unions altogether.
For now, it appears that gay marriage in Massachusetts is a reality. Let us hope that gay marriage advocates use their success here to move beyond the rhetoric of “rights” and talk about the meaning of marriage. Should they do that, they may well succeed in convincing other Americans of the merits of their cause.

BREAKING NEWS: GOP HOUSE PASSES ANTI-HATE CRIMES LEGISLATION
While the hate-filled Gay Lefties are consumed with their own bile… .the Republican-controlled US House of Representatives just passed anti-hate crimes legislation.
When the Democrats controlled the US House for FORTY years, this never happened.

UPDATE: Log Cabin Republicans release statement. Meanwhile today, the Human Rights Campaign blames Bush…. for something about abortion I’m sure. Here’s LCR’s release, and yes… the HRC release, too…. after the jump.

GP Guestblogger: Shouldn’t Gays Be Pro-Life?
Here is a good piece written by Nick, also to be known now as “ColoradoPatriot”.
================
So I knew there was something, but I couldn’t put my finger on what it was. Something was telling me there was a reason gays and lesbians should be Pro-Life instead of Pro-Choice. Finally yesterday it dawned on me:
“Pro-choice advocates” aren’t as much pro-choice as they are pro-abortion. Now, either side of this argument (or whichever shade of grey) you fall on, you have to admit that the leaders of this position (NARAL, NOW, etc.) aren’t merely concerned about making sure the procedure is “safe and rare.” No, these groups are for on-demand, anytime, anywhere abortion for all, no matter what. This, to be fair, does not necessarily represent the entire population who identify themselves as “pro-choice”. But it is who is representing them. (And it is who the gay ‘leaders’ are associating with.)
That being understood, it’s those “advocates” who want absolutely no restrictions on abortions who cannot bring themselves to condemn partial-birth abortions or abortions of “inconvenient” babies, such as those with birth-defects or even of an undesirable sex. As this drives the debate, let’s think about that in a different context:
What’s the most commonly held medical/scientific belief in the gay and lesbian community these days? We’re born this way, right? There’s a gene maybe, or at least something that happens during gestation that makes us gay. For some reason (and I’ve never been able to understand why), this is a crucial part of the psyche of the collective gay community. For whatever reason, just think for a minute how that belief matches the pro-abortion advocacy:
It’s only a matter of time before some industrious biologist or geneticist or whatnot comes along and says: Here! is the gene that causes homosexuality, or Here! is the chemical in the amniotic fluid that leads to gay babies (a la the hypothalamus)! So if the drive-by Walgreen’s abortion proponents don’t want any restrictions on abortion, what’s to keep the following scene from occurring:
“Well I’ve run all the tests, and I’m sorry, Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Your fetus is perfectly healthy except he’s going to be a queer. Luckily, since the Supreme Court has allowed it, we can take care of that right now and then you can get on home and give it another shot making another, hopefully heterosexual fetus. What do you say?”
Now, this isn’t to say we’ll devolve into some Huxley/Orwell/Darwin world wherein the government or science decides which “defects” are “viable” and which are not. But it does leave open the door for any parent who might not want a gay baby to have the option of aborting it for that reason alone.
Ultimately, here’s the question the gay community needs to ask HRC and other pro-choice gay organizations: Would you advocate, and (more importantly) would you lobby NARAL and NOW (etc.) to advocate restrictions on abortions of convenience such as this? If they can’t honestly answer that question in less than 3 seconds, I think we know where their loyalties lie. And that’s kinda creepy.
New Gallup Poll on Katrina Aftermath
If any of the network news organizations cover this poll…. I’ll eat my shorts. (Hat tip: AnkleBitingPundits)
Most interesting nugget:
The Blame Game:
49% of Americans say the media are spending too much time trying to affix blame
48% say the same about Democrat leaders in Congress
31% say the same about Republican leaders in Congress
That’s the sound of Howard Dean’s brow sinking…..

Gay Groups Suffer Egg On Face After Roberts Hearings Today
I caught literally 10 minutes of the Roberts confirmation hearings this afternoon while I was woofing down lunch. Under questioning by Sen. Joseph “I Cheated In Law School” Biden, Roberts clearly stated that he believes there is an inherent right of privacy that goes beyond physical restraint.
So, to all of the gay groups that opposed him for assuming he didn’t believe that….. will you apologize?
And all of you GayPatriotContrarians who opposed him for that reason….. will you apologize?
I know the answer already….
UPDATE: Stephen Miller at Independent Gay Forum covers Roberts’ testimony on Tuesday more in depth.
Judge John Roberts, blasted by gay abortion leftwing activists as a dangerous threat to our basic liberties, during his testimony on Tuesday spoke eloquently about the equal protection clause, saying that while the context was clearly about slavery, the intent of the framers was broader than just racial inequality.
Read the whole piece. Stephen had more time to watch than I did!

Boston Herald Agrees — It’s ‘Intimidation’
Wow…. who’d have thought that a newspaper in Boston would ever agree with me on a gay rights issue?
Intimidation On The Web – Boston Herald Editorial
You’d think that people who have in their lives experienced a certain level of discrimination might be just a little sensitive to the feelings of others. But that’s apparently too much to ask of Tom Lang and his spouse Alex Westerhoff, who have launched knowthyneighbor.org.
The aim here is clearly to intimidate. It is also an open invitation to harass those who sign on to the measure. It’s rather like earlier efforts by ardent anti-abortion groups who posted the names of doctors who performed abortions on their Web sites. At least one of those doctors ended up dead.
Lang and Westerhoff are engaging in an ugly, ugly bit of business that can only lose them the support of Massachusetts voters who might otherwise be content to live and let live.

Iraq President’s ‘Thank You’ To America

Yesterday….at the White House…. in case you missed it since the network news doesn’t cover good news from Iraq:
PRESIDENT TALABANI: Thank you. Thank you, Mr. President, for your kind remarks. It is honor for me to stand here today as a representative of free Iraq. It is an honor to present the world’s youngest democracy.
In the name of Iraqi people, I say to you, Mr. President, and to the glorious American people, thank you, thank you. Thank you, because you liberated us from the worst kind of dictatorship. Our people suffered too much from this worst kind of dictatorship.
Thank you, and thanks to the United States, there are now 15 million Muslims in Afghanistan and Iraq liberated by your courageous leadership and decision to liberate us, Mr. President.
We agree with Mr. President Bush that democracy is the solution to the problems of the Middle East. Mr. President, you are a visionary, great statesman. We salute you. We are grateful to you. We will never forget what you have done for our people.
We are proud to say openly and to repeat it that we are partners of the United States of America in fighting against tyranny, terrorism, and for democracy. It is something we are not shy to say and will repeat it everywhere, here and in Iraq, and the United Nations and everywhere.
Iraq is America’s ally in the war against terrorism. Our soldiers are now fighting side-by-side with your brave soldiers, now and every day. We have captured many senior elements of al Qaeda. We killed many of them, and we have also many of them in our prisons.
That’s from the elected President of Iraq. Just in case you missed it….

Ahnuld can’t catch a Break on Gay Marriage
Seems like my Governor can’t catch a break. This good man signals his intention to veto a bill recognizing gay marriages in the Golden State and the gay left (and even a few otherwise sensible gay centrists and conservatives) gets all upset. Well, now some social conservatives are upset too. According to 365gay.com, groups who support amending the state constitution to bar gay marriage “are accusing the governor of defying Republican reasoning by suggesting the issue should be put to the California Supreme Court.”
As I find time later in the week, I hope to write a little bit thoughtfully on the proposed gay marriage legislation, but for now, I will note that while, given the circumstances, I think the Governor is doing the right thing in vetoing this legislation, he has not done a good job of explaining himself on the issue.
Although I voted against it, five years ago, more than 60% of my fellow Californians approved Proposition 22 which defined marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Because the people have spoken on the issue, if the legislature is serious about gay marriage, then the proper thing to do would be to put the question before them again–in the form of a ballot initiative to repeal that proposition. Or, indeed, a proposition to redefine state-recognized marriages as the union of two individuals.
Oh, and . . . someone needs to tell 365gay.com reporter Mary Ellen Peterson that an institution she defines as moderate, the California Council of Churches, is anything but. It is really quite left-wing.
So, while some on the left think the Governor is pandering to the far right in vetoing the gay marriage legislation, the latest remarks by some social conservatives suggest otherwise.

Gay Marriage Intimidation Tactics, Part II
Okay…. I read all of the comments on this posting, so I felt the need to do a second posting. As a challenge.
In the comments section on this posting, if you are in favor of gay marriage and proud of it… please type in your full name, address and home phone number. Keep in mind that those that read this website range from those gay “outing” activists on the radical Left to many conservatives who are curious about a gay conservative to the radical Right folks that know more about beastiality than one should.
Since many of you feel it is okay to publish the names of those for, whatever reasons (political, personal or moral), oppose the idea of gay marriage….. I challenge you: Are you willing to go public with your names and private information to potentially expose yourself to a range of eyes and intentions of good and bad people alike?
Put up or shut up…..

The Education of a Man who was Once “Nothing but Gay”
In the comment section to my piece on Joe Solmonese’s liberalism, reader Mike alerted me to this excellent post by a new gay blogger.
Reflecting on a gay man who “seems to believe all homosexuals are liberal,” Prismwarden writes
Still, doesn’t he realize by assuming gays are liberal that he is unconsciously reinforcing the systematic social oppression of a world that pressures us to be liberal?! How insensitive and close-minded, no, how hateful to place those kinds of expectations on us.
Upset in November 2000 at the victory of George W. Bush, this open-minded man has since
aged beyond adolescent self-identity politics to the wider world of free-thinking adults. I am free of the shrieking homosexual activism and its filthy, grime-ridden claws of insecurity and self-loathing.
From a man who was once “nothing but gay,” he began to realize that “No shared sexual orientation could ever bind” him to the “twisted beliefs” of gay leftists who “hated too much and too easily.”
There is much to commend in this post and rather than rewrite it here, please read the whole thing and keep an eye on this blog!

The Gay Left’s New Low — Targeting American Civilians
Thanks to GP Reader Anthony for sending me this outrageous story.
Pair vows to out anti-gay wed signers: AG certifies ballot measure – Boston Herald
A pair of gay activists are raising the stakes in the fight over same-sex marriage, vowing to post on the Internet the name and address of anyone who signs a petition to ban gay marriage and civil unions in Massachusetts.
“I have the fight in me now, and if people I know, or that I support, or that I do business with are on that list, I might not support them or their philanthropies or their businesses,” said Tom Lang, who launched knowthyneighbor.org with his spouse, Alex Westerhoff.
These two guys are basically threatening retribution or violence by posting names and addresses of those who oppose them politically.
Can you imagine how the Human Rights Campaign would howl if the names and addresses of openly (or not open) gay and lesbians were posted on a website? “A hate crime!”, they would scream!
Well, how is this less of a hate crime? Or at the very least, political intimidation at its absolute worst? Is this what the political dialogue in America has sunk to?

Just like the Shinbone Star, MSM neglects the facts, prints the legend
Last night, I watched a movie which instantly joined Shane and Clint Eastwood‘s Unforgiven as one of my favorite Westerns. In The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, James Stewart plays Ransom Stoddard, a lawyer who thinks he can deal with Liberty Valance, a bloodthirsty bandit, through the law, but ends up facing him in a gun battle. Legend has it that he shot Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin), but in reality, hiding in the shadows, Tom Doniphon (John Wayne) fires the bullet that finishes off the villain. When, years later, Stoddard returns to the town for Doniphon’s funeral, he tells the press the true story, the editor of the Shinbone Star refuses to use it, saying “When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.”
It seems in the wake of the Hurricane Katrina, the MSM is not much different from its fictional counterpart. In this case, the media made the legend–that President Bush and the federal government failed miserably in response to this once-in-a-century catastrophe. As the resignation earlier today of FEMA head Michael Brown indicates, the federal response was far from perfect, but as this blog (e.g., here, here and here) and others have shown, local agencies made the lion’s share of mistakes in the evacuation and recovery efforts.
But, despite this evidence, the MSM continues to report the legend. In an AP article today, Jennifer Loven notes that the president visited New Orleans today with “New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco — both of whom have criticized the federal response.” Ms. Loven focuses only on criticism of the president and neglects to mention that many have criticized those two individuals for flawed city and state responses (respectively) to the disaster.

Power out in LA; local media in major meltdown
Earlier today, a reader Instant Messaged me noting that the site was down. He wondered if it was related to the blackouts here in LA. Well, my neighborhood was spared the blackout. And by the time I set off to run a few errands, the power was back on across LA, but when I tuned into talk radio, every station was covering the hour or so loss of power as if it were a major catastrophe. LA Blogger Matt Szabo noted that the news media snapped “into car-chase mode as the melodrama unfolded.” I highly recommend Matt’s coverage of the “catastrophe,” for as he so wisely observes, “Few things are funnier than watching an inconvenience covered as a crisis.”
