Exploring the End of the Other Trail…

August 8, 2005 by admin

After lingering at the “Encounter” for a bit on Saturday afternoon (See posting below) …. I decided to head out and explore the Portland area on my own. Okay, okay… I was looking to play “Texas Hold ‘Em” at the Spirit Mountain Casino. You caught me.
But first, I stumbed upon a National Historic Landmark that it hadn’t occurred to me was so close to Portland… the end of the “other” trail…. The Oregon Trail. No, not the software game…. the *original* Oregon Trail.

I drove around Oregon City for a bit, and of course got lost. Then it was off to Spirit Mountain to see what I could find. What I found was an hour wait in the Poker Room. I gave up the quest for a Flush and headed back to Portland so I could rest up for what would turn out to be a very busy Sunday.

Saturday in the Northwest

August 8, 2005 by admin

Hey everybody. Sorry for my tardiness in posting this weekend. I’ve been doing a lot of driving around and exploring of the Portland area (as you will see). One housekeeping note.. we are still working out glitches in the switchover to WordPress. I’m aware of the issue of old “Comments” seemingly lost…. that is the first priority at the moment. Please send other comments and suggestions to me via email.
So on Saturday, the Lewis & Clark Trail Heritage Foundation’s annual meeting got started in earnest. They bussed the attendees to a local park to see “Encounter at Nichaqwli.” I was quite disappointed. It was more like a vendor show than a “recreation” of a Native American village like the meeting agenda suggested.

Ah well. I then decided to head out on my own and see what I could find….

NJ Democrats Manipulated Post-9/11 Security

August 8, 2005 by admin

This qualifies as the Outrage of the Decade. Once again, the Democrats illustrate why they are more interested in power, for power’s sake… than actually helping the people they are always opining about. (Hat tip: Michelle Malkin)
Governor’s Office Steered Terror Aid – Newark Star-Ledger

The homeland security grants sparked controversy in July when The Star-Ledger reported that 93 percent of the $23 million handed out since 2002 had gone to districts controlled by Democrats. At the time, Codey spokeswoman Kelley Heck said the governor’s office “didn’t play a role in the awarding of those grants.”
More than $8 million was allocated for the program this year with 94 percent going to districts controlled by Democrats. The money was part of the 2005 budget approved six weeks before McGreevey announced his resignation last summer.
When the grants were distributed in April, more than $7.8 million went to Democratic legislative districts. Municipalities in Republican districts got $523,454, despite requesting a similar amount as Democrats.

By the way, this pattern of corruption began as policy under Jim McGreevey…. you know the one the gay community wants to hold up as a proud “gay American.” No thanks.
One final note…. the only winner in this outrage is the Star-Ledger. This is the kind of reporting, regardless of which party is doing it, that the media should concentrate on. Not silly conjecture over whether the most photographed “undercover” CIA agent had her cover blown by anyone other than her blowhard husband.

Excuse our Mess!

August 7, 2005 by admin

Good Sunday morning. If you have a keen eye, you will see that GP.org has made a change. We switched over to WordPress this weekend. So there may be a few technical glitches that we have to work out to get things “just right.” But for the most part, thanks to Jay — the Official GayPatriot Webmaster — this has been a very smooth switchover.
I’m about to leave for the Sunday activities of the Lewis & Clark Meeting. Saturday’s stuff was quite lame… and I’ll write about that later.
Enjoy the weekend. Hope you folks back East are having a cooler time of it than this past week.
PS – Did I mention that Portland has no humidity? 😉

My First Dispatch from the Lewis & Clark Meeting

August 5, 2005 by admin

Upon FINALLY arriving in Portland (see posting below), I immediately headed to the Lewis & Clark College, site of the Lewis & Clark Train Heritage Foundation’s Annual Meeting, to register for the conference.

Man, the weather today in Portland was incredible. Blue skies, warm (okay, hot) sun… and guess what East Coasters…. no humidity! No wonder Lewis and Clark made it out here… if you can survive a Virginia summer, you can handle anything.

How Much Do I Hate United….

August 5, 2005 by admin

Let me count the ways….. But today, Northwest actually cemented the fact that my trip to Portland would start out with a hellish experience.
As Sophia would say….estellegetty.jpg… “PICTURE IT…..”
Philadelphia Airport at 4:45AM on Thursday. An attractive young (ahem) man arrives to find the very first United flight out to their main hub (Chicago) is already late… and he will miss his connection to Portland thereby throwing his entire travel day in jeopardy before it begins….

HRC’s Tepid Response to Roberts’ Pro Bono Work

August 5, 2005 by admin

Read it all right here…. Roberts Role in Gay Case Re-emphasizes Need for Full Examination – HRC.org

Judge Roberts? involvement in the case is noteworthy, but his participation adds little to our understanding of how he would vote on the court. The stakes are too high for guessing games over Judge Roberts? stance.
The Supreme Court makes critical decisions and it is the nominee?s job to guarantee that he will protect individual rights and freedoms on the nation?s highest court. Judge Roberts has consistently argued that as an attorney, he has zealously represented the interests of his client, no matter his personal views. Judge Roberts should make clear where he personally stands on important constitutional principles.

But this photo on HRC’s front page of their website makes it seem they have *already* decided….

Lucky for me… and all of you…. The Malcontent checked it out, and actually has a link so you can view the entire show! Wooo hoooo!
Of course I haven’t had time to watch it that way either. *pouting*

July job growth stronger than expected

August 5, 2005 by admin

The Bush Economy continues at fulll steam. “U.S. employers accelerated the pace of job creation last month and dispensed the biggest wage increases in a year.” In addition, “the Labor Department revised its estimates of non-farm job growth for May and June, saying employers added 126,000 in May and 166,000 in June. Previous estimates indicated a 104,000 increase in May and a 146,000 increase in June.
And thanks to the diligence of my readers, I learned that even the The New York Times took notice seeing that the job growth confirms the economy’s strength.

SCOTUS Nominee Roberts Aided in Gay Rights Case

August 4, 2005 by admin

HUGE STORY. Roberts Donated Help to Gay Rights Cause – LA Times

Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts Jr. worked behind the scenes for gay rights activists, and his legal expertise helped them persuade the Supreme Court to issue a landmark 1996 ruling protecting people from discrimination because of their sexual orientation.

How can the Human Rights Campaign, Log Cabin Republicans and National Gay & Lesbian Socialist Task Force oppose him now? (Hat tip: Roger Simon)
UPDATE: Just received this comment from Chris Barron at Log Cabin Republicans: “Log Cabin is engaged in a thorough and thoughtful review of Judge Roberts? nomination to the United States Supreme Court. Log Cabin is carefully studying the record and writings of Judge Roberts. We will be closely watching his testimony during this confirmation process. Judge Roberts? work on the Romer case is part of his record and we are hopeful it is a sign that he will be a fair-minded jurist on issues of basic fairness for gay and lesbian Americans.”

I Shall Proceed On….

August 3, 2005 by admin

I have had the proverbial week from hell. Tons ‘o work….away from home… no PatriotPartner or PatriotPooches keeping me company.
But I’m looking forward to a very exciting journey this weekend. Ever since a trip to Montana and Wyoming a couple years ago, I have become a part-time, very amateur student of the Lewis & Clark Expedition. (Great background resource here: Discovering Lewis & Clark)
And this weekend, I’m going to be blogging from the Annual Meeting of the Lewis & Clark Trail Heritage Foundation, to which I contribute.

Right after the trip, I became consumed in one of my all-time favorite books: Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose.

Dems more involved in voter intimidation than GOP

August 3, 2005 by admin

While lately the Democrats’ latest major mantra is “Bush Lied,” this post (Hat tip: Roger Simon) reminded me that a past Democratic mantra was, “Bush Cheated.” Kerry would have won in 2004 had Bush and his cronies, led by the evil genius Karl Rove, not suppressed the Democratic vote in the Buckeye State and rigged electronic voting machines there and in the Sunshine State.
Well, the American Center for Voting Rights Legislative Fund found that while “neither party has a clean record” on voter intimidation and suppression, “paid Democrat operatives were far more involved in voter intimidation and suppression activities than were their Republican counterparts during the 2004 presidential election.” Emphasis added.
The report found that paid Democratic operatives slashed the tires of GOP get-out-the vote vans in Milwaukee while Democratic operatives in Ohio were “calling voters telling them the wrong date for the election and faulty polling place information.” There was also “clear evidence of fraud in the Nov. 2 election in Milwaukee,” where “thousands more ballots [were] cast than voters recorded as having voted in the city.” Maybe W did win the Badger State after all.
Just look what happens when you follow Barbara Boxer’s advice and “focus the light of truth on these terrible problems in the electoral system.” You find that Democrats are far more responsible for these problems than Republicans. Mrs. Boxer could not be reached for comment at press time.
-Dan (AKA GayPatriotWest): GayPatriotWest@aol.com
UPDATE: Captain Ed has more on this, including an update where he suggests that it’s “worth maintaining some skepticism on this report until more is known about the organization.”
UPDATE #2: Well, while I was busy running errands and getting stuck in LA traffic, then attending to some volunteer responsibilities back here, Cap’n Ed was busy learning more about the American Center for Voting Rights. (Click here, then scroll down to UPDATE II.) He finds that while Mark F. “Thor” Hearne, one of the signatories of the aforementioned report, did indeed work on the Bush/Cheney campaign in ’04, the other signatory to the report, Brian Lunde, worked for Jimmy Carter’s 1976 presidential campaign and has since served as executive director of both the Kentucky Democratic party and the Democratic National Committee. So, as the good captain puts it, the report does indeed have “some bipartisan credentials.”

Are Eagle Scouts Acceptable to Syracuse University?

August 2, 2005 by admin

The “Home News Tribune” in Middlesex County, NJ reports that “Eagle Scouts are a rare breed.”
Gaining More By Giving – Home News Tribune
Indeed they are.
But someone better tell poor Ken Stigner, Jr (profiled in the article) that he won’t be welcome at his college-to-be.

“”Being an Eagle Scout will help me with my life goals,” said Stigner, a 2005 Monroe Township High School graduate who plans to study television production at Syracuse University in the fall. “The things I learned during my project will stay with me forever.”

You see, Ken…. Syracuse University doesn’t really want your kind.
Boy Scouts and Orangemen Don’t Mix – GayPatriot archives
In fact, a few weeks ago I contacted the Syracuse University’s Office of Multicultural Affairs whose stated mission is:

The Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) provides the necessary support and guidance needed to encourage students to become members of a community respectful of differences. OMA assists students to grow into individuals willing to take a proactive stance against oppression in all its forms.
OMA offers one-on-one support for students of color at Syracuse University. OMA reaches out to students of all colors who are struggling with mixed messages they may receive in dealing with the issues of race and diversity in their own communities.

So I asked the head of OMA what policies are in place to deal with the discrimination faced by conservative students and faculty. After all, conservatives are discriminated against across America’s campuses.
My response was a non-answer. But what else would I expect from the University that bans the Boy Scouts?

Random Tuesday Evening Thought

August 2, 2005 by admin

Since as a gay conservative, I’m constantly labeled as a “self-loathing gay”… well, it got me thinking.
Since nearly all of the gay community’s leadership and activists are aligned with pacifist, anti-military, anti-religious, pro-abortion, and anti-capitalist causes…..
Wouldn’t that make Gay Leftists “self-loathing Mainstream Americans”?

Deliberate Misunderstandings of our mission in Iraq

August 2, 2005 by admin

As screenwriters go, David Koepp is among the best. Not only did he write help write the scripts for two entertaining films in the 1990s, Jurassic Park and Mission: Impossible, but he also wrote two of the smartest films of 2002, Spider-Man and Panic Room). Most recently, he helped write the script for Steven Spielberg‘s remake of War of the Worlds which both Bruce and I thoroughly enjoyed. My blog-league described it as “a good, nail-biting movie that truly captures America after September 11th.”
And yet while the actions of the main characters in the film did seem to, as Bruce put it, “represent an interesting cross-section of Americans in the hours after the Towers fell, Koepp, who helped pen the script, claimed “the Martian attackers in the film represent the American military, while the Americans being slaughtered at random represent Iraqi civilians.” In other words, he suggests that our troops invaded Iraq with the express purpose of killing the Iraqi people. But, he’s not the only Administration critic who misunderstands what we’re doing in Iraq. Hilary Rosen, the former First Lady of the Human Rights Campaign has found “another word for ‘insurgents’ in Iraq, and that’s ‘residents.’” (via Polipundit).
It seems that instead of describing the situation in Iraq for what it is, these two individuals, like so many other critics of the Administration’s policy there, deliberately misrepresent the situation in order to better criticize the war and attack the president. Mr. Koepp’s words notwithstanding, it’s not the Americans who are targeting Iraqi civilians, but the very “insurgents,” Ms. Rosen thinks represent Iraqi residents. According to the Middle East Times, “on average 33 Iraqis die every day, executed by Iraqis and foreign jihadis and suicide bombers, not by US or British soldiers.” (Emphasis added.)

The Left’s major mantra: “Bush Lied”

August 1, 2005 by admin

In a comment to my latest post on media bias, a critic of this blog listed several of the president’s alleged ‘lies’ and in the process, managed to misrepresent much of what the president actually said. (As do many who accuse him of lying.) So often do leftists accuse the president of lying that the expression “Bush lied” has practically become the mantra of the moveon.org crowd. A google search of the expression yields well over 200,000 hits.
While leftists have accused the president of lying on multiple topics, they have focused on the statements the president made–before the liberation of Iraq–about that nation’s Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD). To be sure, while, after Iraq’s liberation, U.S. troops and others have found numerous items, including missiles in Iraq that the Hussein had been obligated to destroy, they did not find large stockpiles of WMD. Because of that absence, the president’s critics call him a liar.
For the president to be a liar, he would have had to knowingly deceive the American people–indeed the people of the world–for he laid out his claims about Iraq in a speech to the United Nations on September 12, 2002. At the time, our troops had not yet entered Iraq while that nation’s then-tyrant wasn’t allowing United Nations inspectors in. We couldn’t fully determine wheher Iraq was living up to his obligations under 1991 Gulf War ceasefire as well as under various United Nations resolutions. (We do know that it was violating its obligations to let inspectors in — and to provide detailed reports of its weapons’ programs.) The president based his assessment on the best intelligence available at the time.
