If Iraq is the cause, why are terrorists bombing Egypt

July 24, 2005 by admin

In his post on Thursday, Bruce noted how Australian Prime Minister John Howard replied to a reporter’s suggestion the war in Iraq had “*increased* the threat of terrorism.” That good man from Down Under reminded the reporter that there had been terrorist attacks before the U.S. military liberated Iraq.
In a post yesterday, Captain Ed noted that Al-Qaeda’s attack in the Egyptian resort of Sharm-el-Sheikh proves that Iraq is not the cause of terrorism. While that terror organization claimed it had bombed this city a response against “global evil powers which are spilling the blood of Muslims in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, Chechnya,” the good Captain notes that Egypt has not stationed its troops in any of those areas.
The terrorists have attacked before the Iraq war and have since attacked nations not involved in the war. Those who might dismiss terrorist actions as responses to this war have blinded themselves to the reality of the terrorist threat. Let me repeat the words of the Australian Prime Minister, words quoted on this blog just a few days ago:

And indeed, all the evidence, as distinct from the suppositions, suggests to me that this is about hatred of a way of life, this is about the perverted use of principles of the great world religion that, at its root, preaches peace and cooperation. And I think we lose sight of the challenge we have if we allow ourselves to see these attacks in the context of particular circumstances rather than the abuse through a perverted ideology of people and their murder.

The LA Times does it again

July 23, 2005 by admin

Just five days ago, I wrote that my local paper, the LA Times left out key facts in article on Bush Administration’s efforts to discredit a dishonest critic. Well, they’ve done it again today. In the paper’s article on the continuing “CIA leak investigation,” different reporters (from those who wrote on Monday) offer the same biased account of the claims that former Kerry campaign aide Joseph C. Wilson IV made in the summer of 2003. According to the Times:

Wilson later wrote in the op-ed piece that the claims were likely false and that intelligence cited by the Bush administration to support the invasion of Iraq “was twisted to exaggerate the Iraqi threat.”

Note that the reporters rely on Wilson’s writing to define the claims. Nowhere do they mention the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence’s Report on the U.S. Intelligence Community’s Prewar Intelligence Assessments on Iraq which debunked what Wilson had written. Indeed, Committee Chairman Pat Roberts (R-KS) wrote:

The former Ambassador, either by design or through ignorance, gave the American people and, for that matter, the world a version of events that was inaccurate, unsubstantiated, and misleading.

Light Blogging, Carl Jung and narrow minds

July 23, 2005 by admin

I regret that I have not been able to blog as regularly as I would have liked for the past few weeks. I am delighted to see that since his return, my blog-league has been blogging up a storm and earning us links and accolades across the blogosphere. Bruce, I’m so glad you’re back.
I doubt that I will be able to return to regular blogging until the end of next week as I am currently engrossed in the latest Harry Potter while finishing up research for a paper on Carl Jung and Anti-Semitism (which I need to write by Monday).
While none of the Jews who worked with this great thinker and psychoanalyst found him to be anti-Semitic, some supporters of Sigmund Freud (who broke with Jung in 1913) have made much of Jung’s naivete vis ? vis the Nazis in the early 1930s, taken some of Jung’s comments out of context while relying on a mistranslated version of one of his articles to claim that he was a Nazi. When one studies the evidence, it is clear that while this great man did make a number of mistakes, including underestimating (as did many of his contemporaries) the Nazis’ capacity for evil, he did not collaborate with those vermin.
Nonetheless, that evidence is not enough for some of his intellectual adversaries, particularly some rather fanatic followers of Freud. In his essay, “Carl Gustav Jung: Defender of Freud and the Jews,” the noted child psychotherapist Ernest Harms wrote:

Of course, persons with hate-filled emotions may accept the presentation given here and yet may find the proof inadequate. However, the presentation here is made for sound and humanly adjusted minds and not for psychopathological personalities.*

A gay friend who knows Judge Roberts on the next Supreme Court Justice

July 23, 2005 by admin

I asked a gay friend who knows Judge John G. Roberts, President Bush’s pick for the Supreme Court, what he thought of the court’s next justice. He wrote back that he “has extremely positive things to say about his intellect, judicial temperament, fairmindedness, and personality” and believes him “to be a true conservative, so that gay conservatives (or any other kind of conservatives) who want ‘no more Souters’ need not worry.”

HRC Responds to GayPatriot Terror Posting

July 22, 2005 by admin

Earlier today, I sent an email to the Human Rights Campaign asking for an official statement on their position on the War on Terror, and specifically on the recent actions in the UK and Iran by Islamists against gay men. (Related story here.)
I received a prompt reply from Matt at HRC (Thanks Matt!) and here it is in full. The letter to Secretary Rice is on the HRC website now here.

DC’s Gay Councilmen Dems Strike Out At Ol’ Ballgame

July 22, 2005 by admin

Gay Baseball Night Draws 1,100 to RFK – Washington Blade
“Let it be known that the only two elected officials here tonight are Republicans,” DC Councilwoman Carol Schwartz (R) at Gay & Lesbian Night at the Washington Nationals baseball game (July 19, 2005)
That’s right folks. Over one thousand DC area gay and lesbian residents from Team D.C., an organization of gay and lesbian sports teams, attended the new Washington Nationals as they played this week in RFK Stadium. But not one of the two gay councilmen or *any* elected Democrat was to be found at the stadium to show support of one of their key base group of voters. Nope, just two Republicans.

“It?s awesome,” said Brent Minor, president of Team D.C., an umbrella organization of gay and lesbian sports teams that sponsored the gay Night Out event.
“We didn?t even know if we?d sell the first 150 tickets,” Minor said, while standing on the field before the game. ?We are stunned. We have over 1,100 people here.”
At least seven Major League Baseball teams were scheduled to host a “gay night” event this year at their respective stadiums.

David Catania (I) — but might was well be a Democrat — and Jim Graham (D) are two openly gay members of the DC city council. Maybe they just don’t like baseball? Or was it they just didn’t have the balls to show up? *groaning at my own pun*
Beats me…. frankly, I forgot DC still *had* a baseball team.nats.jpg

BREAKING NEWS: Another Day of Battle in Terror War in London

July 22, 2005 by admin

Is Al-Qaeda in “full attack mode” on London? I don’t know and today’s incident is too early to make any conclusions.. but there is certainly a lot more post-7/7 terror activity in London than there was post-9/11 activity in the USA.
Suspected suicide bomber shot dead on Tube – Daily Mail

Breaking news at 12.20am: A suspected suicide bomber has been shot dead by police at Stockwell Tube station in south London.
The man was shot five times by police at close range, a passenger on the Northern Line train said.
There were unconfirmed reports that the suspect was one of the attackers involved in yesterday’s incidents.

More on yesterday’s attempted bombings…. they are going after schoolchildren now….
A sense of deja vu, but these bombs were aimed at tourists, shoppers and school children – TimesOnline

But whereas the bombs on July 7 targeted London?s commuters at the height of morning rush hour, killing 56 people, yesterday?s attacks seemed intended for very different victims: the tourists, shoppers and schoolchildren using the transport system at midday.
The lack of mass casualties seemed to be the result of incompetence rather than restraint on the part of the bombers. Sir Ian Blair, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, said that there was little doubt the intention ?must have been to kill?.

“1776″ — An Early Impression

July 21, 2005 by admin

1776.jpg
I am about half-way through“1776” by David McCullough. It has been a great (and quick) read so far… and I’m thoroughly captivated by the tenacity of our great American colonial freedom fighters, leaders and philosophers.
I will give complete thoughts when I’m done….but my early impression is that there *is* truly something different and unique about this nation’s “DNA” and its people. That DNA of the “American Spirit” that ran through those early patriots is present even today. Amazing, yet not surprising to me.

Gay Leaders in UK Targeted By Islamist Terrorists

July 21, 2005 by admin

UK Gay Leaders Receive Death Threats from Muslim Fundamentalists – 365gay.com

“Gay venues could be bombed by Islamic terrorists,” OutRage said Monday. “All gay bars and clubs should introduce bag and body searches. Muslim fundamentalists have a violent hatred of lesbians and gay men. They believe we should be killed. Our community could be their next target. This is no time for complacency.”
Peter Tatchell, the leader of OutRage; Brett Lock its campaign coordinator; and Aaron Saeed, the organization’s spokesperson on Muslim affairs, have been warned they will be murdered, Tatchell said Monday.
In a statement Tatchell said that they have been told they are on a “hit list” and are going to be “beheaded” and “chopped up”, in accordance with “Islamic law”.

Now wait just a minute…. the Human Rights Campaign and National Gay & Lesbian Task Force have drilled it into my head that the biggest immediate threat to my safety and security is President Bush, Dick Cheney, Rick Santorum and the lack of gay marriage in the USA!!!
You mean they don’t know that the Islamist terrorists are waging war against Western society? Why haven’t they told me that Islamists hate gay people? What is their position on the War on Terror aside from marching with anti-American, anti-Western, anti-war groups like A.N.S.W.E.R.?
Oh… and has HRC and NGLTF heard about the hanging of two Iranian gay men earlier this week? Or are they too consumed with their pro-abortion agenda and opposition of Supreme Court nominee [INSERT NAME HERE]?

Iranian Gay Youths Hanged – GayOrbit
Someone explain to me why the international gay community has, by their silence and opposition to the efforts to combat the War on Terror, joined in partnership with the Islamists in at least the public relations side of the War?
Will it take a Muslim attack on a gay bar to wake up our so-called leaders? Log Cabin Republicans needs to take some leadership here, step up to the plate and publicly discuss the fact that gay people are targets for the Islamist terrorists whose even ‘moderate’ leaders conduct the hanging of gay people.
At least the UK gay group “OutRage” seems to “get it”!

Aussie PM Howard to British Press — Liberating Iraq didn’t start Islamist terror

July 21, 2005 by admin

I know this is on other blogs (hat tip: The Corner, Instapundit), but since one of the GayPatriot blog’s core missions is to cover the “War on Terror”… I wanted to post it here as well.
Australian Prime Minister John Howard (in London as the latest terror attack occurred) responding to a reporter’s suggestion that the War in Iraq has *increased* the threat of terrorism:

Can I just say very directly, Paul, on the issue of the policies of my government and indeed the policies of the British and American governments on Iraq, that the first point of reference is that once a country allows its foreign policy to be determined by terrorism, it’s given the game away, to use the vernacular.
And no Australian government that I lead will ever have policies determined by terrorism or terrorist threats, and no self-respecting government of any political stripe in Australia would allow that to happen.
Can I remind you that the murder of 88 Australians in Bali took place before the operation in Iraq.
And I remind you that the 11th of September occurred before the operation in Iraq.
Can I also remind you that the very first occasion that bin Laden specifically referred to Australia was in the context of Australia’s involvement in liberating the people of East Timor. Are people by implication suggesting we shouldn’t have done that?
When a group claimed responsibility on the website for the attacks on the 7th of July, they talked about British policy not just in Iraq, but in Afghanistan. Are people suggesting we shouldn’t be in Afghanistan?
When Sergio de Mello was murdered in Iraq — a brave man, a distinguished international diplomat, a person immensely respected for his work in the United Nations — when al Qaeda gloated about that, they referred specifically to the role that de Mello had carried out in East Timor because he was the United Nations administrator in East Timor.
Now I don’t know the mind of the terrorists. By definition, you can’t put yourself in the mind of a successful suicide bomber. I can only look at objective facts, and the objective facts are as I’ve cited. The objective evidence is that Australia was a terrorist target long before the operation in Iraq.

Maybe I should put my Aussie flag up again????

Liberals Discover Iraqi People!

July 20, 2005 by admin

Dirty Harry has the scoop….. Did You Get The Memo? (link fixed!)

Call me cynical, but I don’t think CNN, the BBC, the liberal media, or any liberal for that matter gives a hearty hi-ho-damn about the Iraqi people. I think they just hate America and find this a convenient way to blame us, give the enemy a little more propaganda, and pretend they care.

Seattle Times Columnist: ‘Outing’ Is a Witch Hunt

July 20, 2005 by admin

Excellent column in today’s Seattle Times by Danny Westneat on the “swamp of personal attack politics” that is the gay outing campaign. (Please read the whole column…. it is great!)
When Outing Is Out Of Line – Seattle Times

We’re not all willing to sink so easily into the swamp of personal-attack politics…. It’s possible to be gay and against the gay-rights bill without being a hypocrite…. I support the gay-rights bill, too. But it’s extreme ? disturbing, even ? to conclude that anyone’s position on it justifies a witch hunt into their personal sexual lives.

If only our so-called “gay rights” groups in DC felt as strongly in favor of protecting the individual rights of gays targeted by such efforts… I can only hope, right?
And then there’s this great comment by Dave Kaplan, Log Cabin President for Washington State (and occassional GayPatriot reader!) has this great comment, too:

“Just because you’re gay doesn’t mean you have to agree to every plank of liberal, gay orthodoxy.”

Now THAT is the Log Cabin I joined 10 years ago!!!

STUNNING! HRC decries Bush SCOTUS nominee

July 19, 2005 by admin

The Human Rights Campaign’s pro-abortion, GayLeftist president Joe Solomonese says that Supreme Court Justice John Roberts is anti-gay and will oppose him. I am completely shocked! (sarcasm off)
Joe’s conclusion comes after the concession by himself that Judge Roberts has no record on GLBT issues…. but he MUST be anti-gay because President Bush nominated him, right? Read the whole statement below….. prepare to roll your eyes.

Moments ago, President Bush nominated conservative Judge John G. Roberts, Jr. [INSERT ANY NOMINEE NAME HERE] – (GP editorial comment) to fill the Supreme Court vacancy left by Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.
Knowing he was on the President’s “short list” of potential nominees, HRC has already conducted a preliminary review of his record. We have serious concerns about his judicial philosophy regarding the constitutional right to privacy and legal protections for GLBT Americans. And while he has no paper trail on GLBT issues, that does not mean that he is supportive. His views on legal protections for our community must be examined in Senate hearings. Now that his nomination is official, we’re digging more deeply to learn where Judge Roberts stands specifically on GLBT and other civil rights issues.
Between now and Judge Roberts’ confirmation hearings most likely in September, HRC has a monumental task of analyzing his record and uncovering his beliefs on issues important to GLBT Americans. We urgently need your financial help. Click here to stand with us and help protect our rights.
George Bush has already made more than 200 appointments to the federal bench. It’s highly unlikely that Judge Roberts will be the first with a record of support for GLBT rights or a woman’s right to choose. For example, would he have voted with the majority to strike down anti-gay sodomy laws in America? Or to declare Colorado’s anti-gay Amendment 2 unconstitutional? Neither Clarence Thomas nor Antonin Scalia did — and that’s the kind of appointment Bush promised to make to the Supreme Court.
As you know, there is no more important decision for protecting the rights and freedoms of every American than choosing a Supreme Court Justice. The Supreme Court will have the LAST WORD on the constitutionality of marriage for same-sex couples in America; the LAST WORD on the constitutionality of GLBT-inclusive hate crimes laws; the LAST WORD on whether GLBT Americans can serve openly in our military. Their decisions affect all Americans and all of us must stand together now to fight for a fair and balanced Supreme Court. Click here to make your emergency gift today.
HRC needs YOU and all people who care about GLBT equality. Please, make your donation today and then take a moment to tell a friend about our efforts.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Warmly,
Joe Solmonese
HRC President

Oh, and of course at the end of the letter, the ever money-hungry, palace-building HRC President asks for an “emergency contribution.” Good Lord.

On the Other Hand…. Log Cabin is Cautious

July 19, 2005 by admin

Now this seems like a more reasonable and thoughtful… less knee-jerk and typically GayLefty-reactionary response…..

Log Cabin Republicans News Release
For Immediate Release
July 19, 2005
Log Cabin Republicans on the Nomination of Judge John Roberts to the United States Supreme Court
Statement of President Patrick Guerriero
(Washington, DC)?”Log Cabin looks forward to a thorough and thoughtful review of Judge Robert?s nomination to the United States Supreme Court. Recognizing the importance and impact of the Supreme Court, we support the confirmation of all fair-minded jurists to the bench. Log Cabin will carefully study the record, writings, and testimony of Judge Roberts during this confirmation process, particularly as they relate to questions of basic fairness for gay and lesbian Americans.”

Forgive Log Cabin, they didn’t get the faxed talking points like HRC did from the LibDemocrat National Committee moments before the President’s announcement.
Oh, and Patrick doesn’t ask for any “emergency money” because the world is ending either…..
