In wake of terrorist attacks in London, the “contrast couldn’t be clearer”

July 7, 2005 by admin

I woke this morning to get back to work a delightful vacation with the PatriotFamilyWest in Vermont to learn the terrible news of the terrorist attacks in London. Our hearts go out to the innocent British citizens murdered and injured by these fanatical dastards.
This is just another example of what we are up against in our war against Islamicist terrorists who tarnish their ancient religion by attacking unarmed civilians. Just moments ago, I heard the president on Fox. The same words struck me and the editors of the National Review: “The Contrast Couldn’t be Clearer.” (Hearing the president’s words, I did a google search for “contrast couldn’t be clearer” and “Bush.”) Speaking at the G8 summit, the president said:

The contrast between what we’ve seen on the TV screens here, what’s taken place in London and what’s taking place here is incredibly vivid to me. On the one hand, we have people here who are working to alleviate poverty, to help rid the world of the pandemic of AIDS, working on ways to have a clean environment. And on the other hand, you’ve got people killing innocent people. And the contrast couldn’t be clearer between the intentions and the hearts of those of us who care deeply about human rights and human liberty, and those who kill — those who have got such evil in their heart that they will take the lives of innocent folks.

The president is exactly right. These terrorists target innocent civilians. They timed their attack to hit London’s transportation system at rush hour so as to kill the maximum number of civilians.

Reagan’s Thoughts About Independence Day

July 4, 2005 by admin

Former President Ronald Reagan (and Discovery Channel’s “Greatest American”) had this to say about Independence Day in 1984:

“We don’t celebrate dependence day on the Fourth of July. We celebrate Independence Day. We celebrate the right of each individual to be recognized as unique, possessed of dignity and the sacred right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. At the same time, with our independence goes a generosity of spirit more evident here than in almost any other part of the world. Recognizing the equality of all men and women, we’re willing and able to lift the weak, cradle those who hurt, and nurture the bonds that tie us together as one nation under God.”

Enjoy the fireworks tonight, everyone. The Disney Magic is having a red, white & blue balloon drop in the main atrium in about 20 minutes!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA!!!

July 4, 2005 by admin

Happy 229th Birthday to the United States of America. Still the best hope for freedom, free enterprise and the future of mankind after all these years.
I have to point out that as PatriotPartner and I are spending our first July 4th out of our country, the American and Australian flags are flying at our home back in Virginia (under the watchful eyes of PatriotMom and PatriotPooches).
The Australian flag is on the right to fulfill a promise I made a few months ago to fellow gay conservative blogger RomeoMike in Australia. (See here: Belated Happy Australia Day)

RomeoMike’s posting: I have decided to fly one next to the Aussie flag at home this Australia day. We’d thought hard about the appropriateness of such symbolism on our national day. In the end though, the US is our greatest ally who has always stood by us and with whom we are united, we are greatly indebted, the US is doing so much to help the big picture around the world yet receives ingratitude or hostility from so many quarters; how couldn’t we?
My response: Can someone please remind me when we get close to July 4th to go out an buy an Australian flag to return the favor!!!

Mission accomplished.

Thanks to NorthDallasThirty for the reminder!!!
(UPDATE: This posting was originally done on June 29, but because I can’t currently put up new photos on the Disney Cruise, I decided to modify the original post.)
Please let me know what your plans are for the Fourth of July!!!

Gay Groups Differ in O’Connor Reactions

July 3, 2005 by admin

The “non-partisan” Human Rights Campaign reacts with shrill hyperbole and their usual chicken little rhetoric…. (never mind no prospective nominee has even been announced yet!!!)
O’Connor Retirement is Serious Threat to Civil Rights
…while Log Cabin Republicans did what normal, rational folks do when a national leader announces her retirement… honor her legacy…
Log Cabin Commends Justice O’Connor for Her Service to the Nation
But what do you expect when HRC’s new head is a LiberalDemocrat, Pro-Abortionist?
-Bruce (GayPatriot) – gaypatriot2004@aol.com
UPDATE (from GPW): National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) Executive Director Matt Foreman sees the retirement as a “sad day for the Supreme Court and America” and has called “upon the president to honor the advice and consent role the Constitution gives the Senate in the nomination and confirmation of Supreme Court nominees, including meaningful consultation with both parties.” I’m pretty certain that his predecessors at NGLTF did not call upon President Clinton to seek the advice and consent of the then-Republican minority in the U.S. Senate when he filled vacancies on the U.S. Supreme Court in 1993 and 1994. I guess that clause only applies to Republican presidents.

Day 2 of the Disney Magic Cruise

July 3, 2005 by admin

It is 2:30 Eastern Time on Sunday….and we are steaming down the Pacific Ocean, just south of the Mexican border. I believe we are about 350 nautical miles south of Los Angeles… give or take.
Unfortunately, I cannot “photoblog” since I have to use the Internet Cafe on the ship and so far can’t figure out a way to import photos. Which is too bad, because we have taken some great photos with our new Canon Rebel Digital SLR. *Grrrr* We are still taking pictures so I’ll do a photo-compilation when I get home at the very least.
Today it is overcast and chilly, so not a very good pool day. We are enjoying the relaxation and lack of responsibility (work, walking pooches, etc.)
We are also hoping they are going to have a fireworks show for the 4th of July… that would be very cool.
For now, that’s the report… I’m going to post a couple of more short items today as well.

Celebrating my patriotism on a flight east

July 1, 2005 by admin

I am blogging now from the “Wireless Hotspot” at what I believe is the former Pan Am terminal at JFK. I had an absolutely amazing flight on Jet Blue, flying out of Burbank instead of the ever-congested LAX. Not only were JetBlue staff friendly and courteous, not only were the seats more comfortable than on most airlines, but the airline provided DirectTV (with private screens for each passenger) and as I headed east, I chanced upon the History Channel‘s multi-part documentary, The American Revolution which kept me occupied for the better part of the flight.

Once again, I was reminded of the greatness of George Washington, how his clever tactics helped him lead the first patriots to victory against great odds. How he knew when to retreat to protect his troops, how he suffered the treason of a once-trusted colleague, Benedict Arnold, and how he rallied the troops at the end of the war. It?s a shame that American students are learning less and less about this great man. And I?m grateful for this excellent documentary which reminded me of his character and his many accomplishments.

July 1, 2005 by admin

We are starting out our second day of vacation at Disneyland…. tomorrow we leave for the cruise ship. It was a beautiful day yesterday in sunny Anaheim, California. And we enjoyed a leisurely day of walking around Disneyland to celebrate its 50th Anniversary. Here are some photos from yesterday. We will probably spend a lot of time today at the California Adventure park.

“Bug Chasing” and thoughts on a much-needed conversation on sex and gay life

July 1, 2005 by admin

A couple years ago, Rolling Stone ran an article about “Bug Chasers,” subtitled, “The men who long to be HIV+.” In the article, writer Gregory A. Freeman noted, among others things, a number of gay men had created screen names on sites promoting bareback sex identifying them as interested in contracting HIV. He saw this longing to become HIV-positive as a growing phenomenon in gay culture. To many of those individuals,

The virus isn’t horrible and fearsome, it’s beautiful and sexy — and delivered in the way that is most likely to result in infection. In this world, the men with HIV are the most desired, and the bug chasers will do anything to get the virus — to “get knocked up,” to be “bred” or “initiated into the brotherhood.”

When the piece was published, many gay activists and writers denounced the piece, some saying it gave ammunition to anti-gay voices in American society. (Indeed, a google search yielded several hits of social conservatives using the phenomenon to promote their agenda.) Others said this phenomenon was very limited, if it existed at all.

Yet, just tonight, a friend of mine told me that when he was in San Francisco, an HIV-positive man invited him to a party which shortly after his arrival, he discovered to be a “bug-chasing” party, similar to those described in the film, The Gift. He watched as a number of HIV-positive men tried to infect several young HIV-negative men. He described the event as “intense” and offered a few anecdotes which I won’t present on this blog.

“War of the Worlds” and September 11th

July 1, 2005 by admin

(Writing at 35,000 feet somewhere over the USA at 1:30PM Eastern time on Thursday)
(WARNING: Potential Spoilers are included in this post)
Yesterday before we left for our California/Mexico cruise adventure, PatriotPartner and I decided to see Steven Spielberg?s ?War of the Worlds? on opening day. I?m not really sure what prompted us to do so since we are usually the ?wait to see it on DVD? guys in the neighborhood. But we both had taken the day off of work and figured it wouldn?t be too crowded at the 3:30PM showing?.luckily we were correct.
Earlier in the day I had read the Washington Post?s Stephen Hunter’s review of the new movie. The idea of seeing an action-packed summer movie in the spirit of ?Raiders of the Lost Ark? suddenly appealed to me on a hot and humid summer day. It also served as a way to procrastinate from the dreaded job of packing for our trip.
Within the first 30 minutes of the incredible film, it was quite apparent to me that I was witnessing something I have been longing for during the past three years ? a good, nail-biting movie that truly captures America after September 11th. Far too many months have gone by since we were attacked and since our men and women have been fighting the global terror threat for Hollywood to have kept up its fa?ade that 9/11 did not happen.

July 1, 2005 by admin

As my blog-league travels west, I’m heading east. After a busy past few days with classes, I’ve been a little light on the posting. Later today, I set off for the Green Mountain State to celebrate the birthday of the PatriotMotherWest together with the PatriotSiblingsWest as well as eight of the ten PatriotNephews&NiecesWest (the remaining two are at summer camp). I will attempt to blog from my trip to provide some thoughts, observations and essays for our faithful readers over the holiday weekend.

How Democrats Should Have Responded to Rove

June 29, 2005 by admin

I commented last week that the Liberal Democrat Party of the US (used to be known as the Democrat Party) protested way too much at Karl Rove’s comments about how Republicans and liberals in general responded differently to the terror attacks on America. Republicans went to war mode, Liberals went into the “Blame America” first/therapy for terrorist mode.
Well, as usual, the leaders of our LibDem Party of the US did precisely what Rove knew they would do — they would attack him….attack the messenger.
I hate to give the hate-mongering LibDems any advice…but here it goes. They should have the conviction, courage and policy positions to attack THE MESSAGE.
Yep, why don’t they come out and prove Karl Rove’s statements were wrong by articulating to the American public their anti-Al Qaeda voting records and their anti-Al Qaeda, proactive agenda to fight the War on Terror?
Answer: They cannot because he was right. Why else are they attacking him instead of proving him wrong?

Rocker praises Bush on AIDS/Africa

June 28, 2005 by admin

Well, I think [President Bush has] done an incredible job, his administration, on AIDS. And 250,000 Africans are on antiviral drugs. They literally owe their lives to America. In one year that’s being done. ? Yes, there’s a lot of pressure on President Bush. If he, though, in his second term, is as bold in his commitments to Africa as he was in the first term, he indeed deserves a place in history in turning the fate of that continent around.

Quote of the Day

June 28, 2005 by admin

Democrats are watching with glee as Bush’s job approval stays stuck below 50 percent. But a party that happily allies itself with the likes of moveon.org and many of whose leading members have lost the ability to distinguish between opposition to an incumbent administration and rooting for our nation’s enemies has got serious problems.

The REAL Torture at Gitmo…continued

June 27, 2005 by admin

You may recall in my post last week regarding the hyper-defensive reaction of Democrats to Karl Rove’s correct assessment about their weakness in the War on Terror (Methinks the Dems Protesteth Too Much – June 24)… that I made the following statement:

You have heard liberals/Democrats talk ad nauseum about their “support for the troops” though the oppose the War on Terror’s Iraq Theatre. Really? Then why are elected Democrats wildly exaggerating the abuses at Abu Grahib and Gitmo which, ironically, are the stories Al-Qaeda encourages its members to use in its own “terrorism handbook….I have sources who have contacts within the military who tell me there are abuses going on at Gitmo. People are being punched, people are having feces thrown on them and being spit at regularly.
No, the victims are not the terrorist prisoners….these abuses are happening TO US Armed Forces personnel. You know, the same ones who handle the Koran with rubber gloves. Why don’t we hear the Democrats actually DEFENDING our military men and women instead of just using the words “support the troops, oppose the war.”? Why aren’t Dems outraged at the torture of American troops in our own facilities?

GP Commenter “Dunner” challenged me on that statement here.

I’d love to hear more about your “torture of US troops at Gitmo” stories too, if they’re backed up by more than third-party hearsay (“sources with contacts in the military,” indeed…I have those too, Bruce, and they’re called “the media”). Leave the journalism to the journalists, Bruce. I thought you learned that lesson at SU…?

Well, the details about the real torture going on at Gitmo are emerging…thanks to those who know the truth — US military personnel who have visited Gitmo.

Belated Portland, ME Pride Festival Report

June 27, 2005 by admin

Loyal GP Reader Noah from Southern Maine helped staff the Log Cabin Republican booth during the Portland Pride Festival (June 16-18). He recounted the experience in a recent email to me.

I ended up being in the parade (again), and then it was time for the festival, which was indoors due to rainy weather. The festival went from 1pm to 5pm, and I staffed the Log Cabin table from 3-5. For the first two hours I was able to enjoy the festival, and occasionally I overheard people making comments about Log Cabin being there, ranging from neutral to negative.
I was actually approached by HRC (or rather, a cute boy hired by HRC), and I politely explained to him I felt the organization?s words and actions countered any claim they made about being bipartisan, and they weren?t getting anywhere with the *majority* party. But yes, I?d love a sticker, thanks! I wore the sticker sideways to make a pause sign, and when people asked why it was sideways (or upside-down, as one genius put it), I said it was because HRC wasn?t getting anywhere. (GP Ed. Note: LOL!)
Then it was time to staff the LCR table. Amazingly, only once was I compared to a Jewish Nazi. The new thing I heard, and this really bugs me, is ?You?re too young to be a Republican.? One person actually ripped off my Log Cabin sticker and ripped it up! Anyway, the whole point of the table was a postcard campaign for the Military Readiness Enhancement Act, which would overturn DADT. We collected about 250 postcards, most of which will go to my local rep, Tom Allen (D-ME).
All in all, it was pretty good. James [Dozier from LCR National] said it was better than a lot of other places he?d been too, where people had been more hostile. Maybe my grassroots campaign to educate gay Portland one bar buddy at a time has actually paid off!
And now I?m back in the regular world, fully recharged and ready to face another year of minority complex. Yay for gay!

Keep up the fight, Noah!
