NC Congresswoman Wants To Crack Down on Illegals

November 9, 2005 by admin

After Virginia turned a shade of purple in yesterday’s election, Patriot Partner and I are looking more forward than ever to get out of Dodge and go to our new home of Charlotte. 30 days to move-in!
So I was thrilled to see that my new Congresswoman (and possible candidate for Governor!!) Sue Myrick is taking a strong approach on curbing illegal immigration.
Myrick: NC must halt illegal drivers licenses – Charlotte Observer (subscription required)

“Basically, we’re here to call on the governor (Mike Easley) and the legislature in North Carolina to stop issuing driver’s licenses to illegal aliens,” said Myrick, who was joined by GOP Reps. Patrick McHenry of Cherryville and Virginia Foxx of Banner Elk — both former members of the N.C. legislature.
Myrick’s immigration bill, her third this year, targets an issue that has angered her base of conservative supporters.
North Carolina is home to an estimated 300,000 undocumented immigrants. For them, a driver’s license is more than just legal authorization to drive. It’s a government-approved ID, complete with a picture. Flashing this prized possession can make it easier to keep a job, cash a check or find a place to live.

While we’re at it… let’s mandate photo ID’s to vote!!!
Contrast Rep. Myrick’s action with the sorry lillegal immigration mess we are leaving in Northern Virginia…..

Judicial Watch, a conservative watchdog group, added Fairfax County as a defendant in a lawsuit questioning the legality of day labor hiring sites.
The group sued the Town of Herndon earlier this year on behalf of six town residents, questioning the town’s use of public land for a managed day labor site that will be operated by a nonprofit group, Project Hope and Harmony.
Since then, Fairfax County supervisors approved $400,000 in funding to allow some management of three of the four informal day labor sites in the county.

Carolina’s on my mind!!

Herndon VA Sued Over Day Laborer Camp

September 3, 2005 by admin

As I reported earlier, the town of Herndon, VA (Fairfax County, of course) recently voted to set up a day-laborer camp which will concentrate illegal immigrants each day so they can find work.
The project was the brainchild of a local man with ties to Islamic fundraising.
Now, Commonwealth Conservative reports that Herndon has been sued by Judicial Watch on behalf of some town residents who oppose the project.

In its lawsuit, the group requests a permanent injunction to stop Herndon from using taxpayer funds to operate the day laborer center. It also asks a judge to declare the site “unlawful and a violation of federal and state law” because the center will “predominantly” serve illegal aliens.

Islamic Fundraising Connection Illegal Immigrant Project in VA

August 21, 2005 by admin

This is an interesting development. There seems to be a connection between Northern Virginia Islamic fundraising efforts and the day-laborer (ie – illegal immigrant) worksite pickup project in Herndon, VA.
Brief Encounter At Herndon Store Inspired A Charity – Washington Post (subscription required)

Over the objections of hundreds of residents who fear it will bring crime and disorder to the neighborhood, Herndon’s Town Council granted Project Hope and Harmony permission last week to build and oversee such a site in the parking lot behind a former police station. The coalition expects to have it running in two to four months.
Project Hope and Harmony is itself a work in progress. It is an umbrella group, not a nonprofit organization. Although its members plan to file federal papers to become a nonprofit, the application for a grant of about $175,000 from Fairfax County to run the site was made in the name of Reston Interfaith, one of the groups that is part of the coalition.
For Hossain, helping immigrants, most from Central and South America, is a Muslim issue. Charity is one of the five pillars of Islam. So he raised money from Muslim businessmen in Herndon to buy 400 winter coats for the laborers, brought them food through another charity he started, called Food Source, and even rounded up day laborers to attend a Thanksgiving dinner at an Iraqi restaurant where falafel, not turkey, was served.

Given the Al-Qaeda connections repeatedly found in Northern Virginia after 9/11, is anyone else but me disturbed and more than curious about this direct connection between Islamic fundraising and illegal immigration?

VA Governor Warner Should Declare ‘Illegal’ State of Emergency, Too!

August 20, 2005 by admin

Democrats in California urged Gov. Arnold this week when to join the governors of Arizona and New Mexico in declaring a “state of emergency” in the Golden State due to the increasing problems created by illegal immigration.

On Wednesday, Schwarzenegger said he supports the actions of his fellow governors but does not think there is a crisis along California’s border. Schwarzenegger spokeswoman Margita Thompson said the governor continues to lobby for more federal money and has written a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff requesting more border patrol agents.
She noted that Schwarzenegger also supports the construction of a fence along California’s border with Mexico.

Many of you outside the DC metro area might be surprised to learn that Virginia has reached ‘the boiling point’ in the illegal immigration battle as well. It is now front-and-center of our Governor’s campaign this year.

A bitter local dispute over a day-laborer site in Herndon has swept the town of 22,000 into the national spotlight, where it’s become the flashpoint of the nation’s deep ambivalence regarding illegal immigration. America has generally welcomed immigrants, but many Americans are angry at the federal government’s complete failure to secure the borders in this post-9/11 world. They don’t want to be harsh with poor, hardworking people trying to better themselves, but the trickle of illegal immigrants has become a seemingly unstoppable torrent.
